Last night, I spent some time walking through downtown Charles Town as part of the city’s bimonthly Walk About Nothing. The walk takes place on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6:00 p.m., with participants meeting at City Hall. According to the city, the walks began in September 2024 as a simple way to help people connect and talk about the community.

It was a great opportunity to meet city officials in an informal setting and to enjoy the heart of our community on foot. As we walked, we learned more about new businesses coming to town, places to visit, and the kinds of small updates that help residents feel connected to what is happening downtown. One of the best parts of the evening was the chance to see familiar faces, meet new people, and enjoy conversations that might not happen in a more formal setting.

Along the way, local business owners and board members shared updates about projects and improvements, including news from the Old Opera House. The Mayor also highlighted the My Charles Town app, which gives residents a quick way to report potholes and access city resources. The city describes these walks as a chance to talk about everything from sidewalk issues to vacancies, new businesses, and local stories, and that is exactly what made the evening worthwhile.

If you are looking for a simple way to connect with your neighbors, learn more about Charles Town, and spend time in the community, consider joining a Walk About Nothing. The walks meet at City Hall on the first and third Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m., and kids and dogs are welcome.
